Tribute to a Remarkable Soul
As we gather to bid our friend, Dr. Emmanuel Umoh, farewell, and to celebrate his life, I also feel present here aspects of him that may not have been readily obvious to the casual observer.
One thing that should be clear is we are here to honor and celebrate the life of a truly extraordinary individual. Emman, as I call him, was a childhood friend, a lifelong friend, and my brother-in-law.
His presence was nothing short of larger than life, a beacon of light and warmth that touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
His targeted generosity was profound. Whether it was his time, resources, or wisdom, he gave freely and abundantly. His heart was always open, and his hands were always ready to help. His commitment to community service was unwavering, and he was a pillar of strength and support in every sociocultural organization he was part of.
Whether it was springing into action to organize relief for the unfortunate, internally displaced persons in his Afaha community in May 2021, or organizing an annual succor, around the Christmas time, for many of the poorest in several villages of Afaha, his actions revealed a heart tenderness and compassion to those in dire need.
Academically, he reached the pinnacle of success, earning a PhD in his field. In our high school days, only the fleeting, but unmistakable, glint in his eyes would betray this coming reach for such academic heights. Yet, his thirst for knowledge was matched only by his desire to share it. He was an entrepreneur at heart, always encouraging and supporting others in their entrepreneurial journeys, and ready to offer practical advice from his wealth of experience. His innovative spirit and business acumen were truly inspiring.
Emman worked to mentor entrepreneurs in, and around, his community on an ongoing basis. His work also culminated in the establishment of a significant livestock enterprise scheduled to commence operation momentarily in his community. He strategized in having an outfit that would provide sustainable jobs in the community and so help mitigate the poverty in the place.
His dedication to enhancing the lives of the poor in his village and community was a testament to his compassionate nature. He worked tirelessly to create opportunities and improve living conditions, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.
If you interacted with Emman, you knew that laughter was his constant companion. His life interactions were filled with humor and hilarity, bringing joy and smiles to all around him. He had a unique ability to find light in the darkest of times and to lift the spirits of those who needed it most. I am thankful for our last night of hilarity when I visited on July the 10th, though the next day’s interaction was brief, as the end came.
As a committed family man, his love and devotion to his family were evident in everything he did and the intense emotions that attended his family dynamics. He was a source of strength, guidance, and unwavering support. His deep spirituality was the foundation of his life, guiding his actions and decisions with a sense of purpose and faith.
He was firmly opinionated, never shying away from expressing his beliefs and standing up for what he thought was right and was vehemently opposed to what he perceived as corruption or injustice from any quarters.
His hands-on approach to life meant he was always actively involved, never content to sit on the sidelines. He was involved with most of the sociocultural organizations that speak to his locale in Akwa Ibom state and in the organization for the state itself, often operating at, or near, the highest level of leadership in those organizations.
In remembering him, we celebrate a life well-lived, a soul that touched many, and a legacy that will continue to inspire. Though he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit, values, and the love he shared will forever remain in our hearts.
Rest in peace, dear friend and brother. Your memory will always be cherished.
